The Volga River


Russia is a country of big and small rivers. There are many beautiful rivers in the country, which attract numerous tourists from different parts of the world.Volga River is the largest river in Europe, which flows in the western part of the country. The river has many tributaries, which flow through most of Russian cities in different parts of the country. Eleven out of twenty largest Russian cities are situated in the Volga basin.

Volga River plays a very important role in the life of the country, as it provides irrigation for large Russian regions. The largest reservoirs are situated along the Volga River. There are several hydroelectric reservoirs on the Volga River. Kuybyshev reservoir is the largest in the whole Europe by its surface.

Volga River is a popular tourist attraction, as wonderful and unforgettable Russia cruises are usually organized there. While spending the time on the Volga River, the tourists will have a chance to visit Russian cities situated on the river.

Saratov is one of the Russian cities, which is located on the way of Volga River cruises. This city is the main port on the Volga River. The city has an old history, as it was built in the 16th century. Beginning from the 19th century the city has become a very important port in the whole Russian Empire.


Nowadays it is also a very important industrial center of Russia. Saratov is also famous for its scientific centers, research institutes and the Saratov State University. It is also one of the most popular distination of Russian river cruises.

Saratov is surely not the only noteworthy city in the region of Volga River, so tourists will get acquainted with the life of Russian people in different cities on the Volga River.
